Club History

Del Rey Toastmasters (Del Rey) was founded by Emma Sherry and George Schumacher in 1984, and started with only six members. Originally called “Orville’s Toastmasters”, the club was renamed Del Rey Toastmasters one year later.  That same year, the club held a boat party for Toastmasters district officers, and suddenly, Del Rey was on the Toastmasters map!

The club grew stronger with each year, club members actively participated in meetings, members became area and district leaders, and Del Rey began achieving outstanding club rankings within the Los Angeles region. Two of Del Rey’s members even married and invited club members to their wedding! By the dawn of the 1990s it became clear that Del Rey was more than just an ordinary Toastmasters club.

Today, Del Rey’s reputation and membership continue to expand, the club has reached 30 members and consistently ranks among the top clubs in the district.  The club consistently produces great speakers, and in 2017, one of our members,  Tristan-de-Montebello, made it to the finals of the Toastmasters International 2017 World Championship of Public Speaking.   See the “Recent News” tab.
