Our Brief History

The Del Rey Toastmasters Club was started in 1984 with just six members. Originally called “Orville’s Toastmasters,” it was renamed “Del Rey Toastmasters” one year later. The club was founded by Emma Sherry and George Schumacher, who both remain on the club roster.

Within a year of its launch, Del Rey Toastmasters – later nicknamed “Del Rey” – grew to 20 members. That same year, the club held a boat party for Toastmasters district officers. Suddenly, Del Rey was on the Toastmasters map!

The club grew stronger with each year. Club members actively participated in meetings, members became area and district leaders, and Del Rey began achieving outstanding club rankings within the Los Angeles region. Two Del Rey members even married one another, inviting club members to their wedding! By the dawn of the 1990s, it became clear that Del Rey was more than just an ordinary communications club.

Today, Del Rey’s reputation and membership continue to expand. The club has reached 55 members, and Del Rey consistently ranks among the top clubs in the district.

Not resting on its laurels, Del Rey works hard to serve the needs of its members. In fact, the club’s dedication is the key reason why Del Rey’s membership has grown by 10% within the last year.
